LEADING LIB DEM MP VISITS OTLEY

July 23, 2004 12:00 AM

Front bench Liberal Democrat MP Simon Hughes today is visiting Otley as part of a visit to Leeds North West on a tour of the top Liberal Democrat target seats in Yorkshire & The Humber.

Following the sensational by election success in Leicester South, Charles Kennedy announced that the Liberal Democrats, as the clear opposition in Labour held seats, will be targeting Labour seats in the North of England.

Leeds North West Constituency is the top target seat for the Liberal Democrats in Leeds and Simon Hughes is visiting to boost the Liberal Democrats General Election campaign here as well as to mark the sensational local election results when the Lib Dems took all 3 Leeds city Council seats from the Conservatives in June. Across Leeds North West the Lib Dems established themselves as the clear challengers to Labour with no less than 18 Leeds City Councillors representing part of the constituency compared to Labour and the Tories with 6 each.

Mr Hughes will be meeting with Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson Cllr Greg Mulholland and the 3 Liberal Democrat Councillors Cllr Colin Campbell, Cllr Ryk Downes, Cllr Graham Kirkland. Mr Hughes will also meet the Mayor of Otley, Liberal Democrat Otley Town Councillor Jonathan Kirkland.

Commenting on his visit, Mr Hughes said, "Otley is a fine Yorkshire town with a real sense of Civic Pride and it is great that Otley now has 3 hardworking Lib Dem Councillors and I'm sure they will also have a Lib Dem MP before long. The result in Leicester shows that people are sick and tired of Labour and are turning to the Liberal Democrats".

Greg Mulholland said, "After the wonderful local election results when we took all 3 seats in Otley and now have no less that 18 councillors representing Leeds North West, we are the clear challengers to Labour and will be fighting to win the seat at the general election."

Greg added "People in Otley and across Leeds North West have told us they want a change and locally and nationally we intend to provide that change."

If you are a resident of the Leeds North West constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
