Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, welcomed a Leeds family to the House of Commons as part of his participation in a piece broadcast on BBC Radio 5 Live.
The Pickerings family, who came to be known as the House of Commoners, were followed by BBC Radio 5 Live during the general election campaign and had regular contact with Greg when he was a candidate and even hosted a hustings with Greg at their home in Leeds. All generations of the Pickerings family were interviewed before, during and after the general election.
This week Greg returned the favour to the Pickerings by hosting their visit to Westminster. One of the family members, Chris Pickering, attended a meeting of Work and Pensions Select Committee, which Greg is a member of. After this, the family attended Prime Minister's Questions and were then interviewed with Greg for 5 Live about their impressions of the Commons.
Commenting, Greg said:
"It was great to welcome the 'House of Commoners' to the House of Commons for the first time since becoming an MP. I got to know the Pickerings well when I was a hopeful candidate in Leeds, so it was good to see them again in my new capacity as their MP.
"Leeds North West was, and still is, an exciting seat, which is why it received national attention for the BBC Radio 5 Live feature. I think it's really important for politicians to seize any opportunity to involve people in the democratic process and to encourage people to see for themselves what Parliament is really like."
