Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, has laid a motion in Parliament today encouraging people to do their Christmas shopping in local independent shops in Leeds.
Greg, who showed his support and commitment to protecting small shops in Leeds by joining the All Party Parliamentary Small Shops Group this year, has encouraged the people of Leeds to support the existing small shops locally.
Commenting, Greg said:
"Areas such as Headingley and Otley have experienced a decline in the diversity of small shops in recent years. Small shops offer many advantages for the consumer and the local community, such as the quality of the produce sold, the high level of service offered and also the variety of goods available. This has been completely lost through the monotonous development of our high streets.
"By doing Christmas shopping in the excellent small shops we have locally, we will encourage the return of further independent small shops to areas such as Headingley and Otley becoming just another high street with the usual national chain stores. This year, instead of battling their way through the crowds and traffic at soulless retail parks, people should try out a much more enjoyable Christmas shopping experience in their local high streets."
