Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West and Junior International Development Spokesman for the Liberal Democrats, warmly welcomed a Trade Justice lobby to Westminster. Constituents congregated in the Great Hall in the Palace of Westminster to lobby MPs and the Government as part of the Trade Justice campaign.
The first Trade Justice mass lobby was in 2002 which Greg attended, then as a campaigner for Cafod & TIDAL (Trade Injustice Debt Action Leeds).
Commenting, Greg said:
"It was a case of the boot being on the other foot this time, being lobbied as an MP rather than being one of the campaigners, which was rather strange! But it's an enormous pleasure to be able to meet constituents and old friends campaigning for Trade Justice".
Stressing the importance of the need for fairer trade rules Greg said:
"Although effective aid programmes and debt relief help to make poverty history, in the end it will be trade that will lift developing countries out of poverty and this will only be possible if we get fairer world trading rules".
Joining Greg at the lobby was Greg's former boss, Steve Chapman, Cafod's Regional Organiser for Leeds and Hallam, who commented:
"It was great seeing Greg as an MP and we are delighted to see he has become an MP and also a spokesperson for International Development in Parliament after his work for Cafod."
"It's great to see so many people here today exercising their democratic right to lobby their Member of Parliament.
"Today's event is especially important as it gives people an opportunity to voice their concerns about the forthcoming World Trade Organisation Ministerial meeting in Hong Kong in December."
Greg concluded:
"It was a successful day and has helped keep Trade Justice firmly on the agenda. Along with many other MPs, I have pledged to keep the pressure on the Government so that we can start to see a trading system that allows poorer countries to take part."
