Greg Mulholland, Member of Parliament for Leeds North West, has highlighted his concerns over the governments new Terrorism Bill, published today. Contained within the new measures, Charles Clarke, the Home Secretary, has proposed to extend the maximum period of detention without trial from 14 days to three months.
Responding to the proposals, Greg said:
"My colleagues and I will continue to seek consensus on terrorism legislation.
"But today's announcements have provided some major sticking points.
"The proposal for holding suspects for up to 3 months is totally unacceptable. My colleagues and I are extremely sceptical of the case for any further extension.
"While we all appreciate the complexity of these cases, alternative solutions may exist, including better resources for forensics teams."
