Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, has today called upon the Government to tackle the trade of unwanted pets. Greg visited the Yorkshire Animal Shelter in Horsforth on Saturday 10th September and was shocked to see the extent of the problem facing shelters such as the Yorkshire Animal Shelter.
Greg was shown around by Shelter Manager Judith Cotterill and the Chair-Person of the Executive Committee, Lynn Ziliukas. The Shelter, which is run entirely by volunteers, takes on cats, rabbits and other animals such as goats and Shetland Ponies. Most of the Shelter's work involves taking on animals which have been abandoned by their owners. The Shelter has found itself in a difficult situation as it does not receive enough funding and consequently is constantly full to capacity.
Commenting, Greg said:
"The work that staff at the Yorkshire Animal Shelter undertake is highly important and I praise all their efforts in attempting to re-house as many abandoned animals as they can."
"The Shelter does excellent work and manages to re-house around 25-30 abandoned pets per week, which is a tremendous achievement. However, many more than this number are abandoned each week, which indicates the scale of the problem."
"It is vital that the Government does much more to tackle the problem of unwanted pets. It is also necessary for us all to take more responsibility and appreciate the obligations we have to our pets."
