New figures released by the Department for Transport today show that bus and rail use in England is falling as fares and unreliability increase. Local MP, Greg Mulholland has highlighted this latest set of embarrassing figures as further evidence for the proposed Supertram scheme to go ahead.
The figures reveal that:
• local bus fares have increased 2% while 14 out of every 1000 buses did not turn up.
• 83.6% of trains in Britain arrived on time in 2004/05, down from 89.7% when Labour came to power in 1997/98.
• Meanwhile, road traffic in Britain in 2004 was up 1.7% from the previous year, and was 10.9% higher than in 1997.
Commenting Greg said:
"What people in Leeds desperately want is a safe, reliable and affordable public transport system.
"These figures show the proposed new bus service will simply not get people out of their cars the way Supertram would.
"The wheels have came off the Government's transport policy and it's people in Leeds who have to suffer."
