BIG HEALTH PROBLEMS BEING STORED UP FOR YOUNGSTERS FOR THE FUTURE: MULHOLLAND

August 26, 2005 12:00 AM

Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, has today commented on the Department of Health survey of underage drinking, smoking and drug use among young people in England in 2004, which was published today.

The survey revealed that one in ten 11 to 15-year-olds, including those in Leeds North West, admitted using cannabis, while one in 20 confessed to having sniffed glue, gas and other volatile substances. Around one in 10 respondents said they are regular smokers, getting through more than 40 cigarettes a week. And just under a quarter often drink alcohol, with boys drinking more heavily than girls.

Commenting on the results of the survey, Greg said:

"These figures show big health problems are being stored up for the future. Nearly one in 10 young teenagers are regular smokers. As girls are smoking more than boys there is scope for more creativity in targeting health messages at young girls."

"On average young people today are now drinking double the number of alcoholic units they did in 1990. This is further evidence of the Government's failure to tackle the binge drinking culture in this country. Parents need to take some responsibility for their children's health and safety."

"The Government should use the opportunity presented by the 2012 Olympics to inspire young people. Sports based projects, using sporting celebrities as good role models could help children live healthier lives."
