New Lib Dem MP for Leeds North West Greg Mulholland has called on Headingley to take the opportunity presented by the Leeds Girls' High School move to Alwoodley, announced earlier today.
Reacting to the news, Mulholland expressed concern for all those affected: "For pupils, parents and staff, the move will present challenges as well as new possibilities. Naturally, Headingley residents will be worried about the future of the school's campus. Developers must take steps to reassure local people that their voices will be heard at every stage in the process."
But Mulholland said the news could present an unexpected boost to the Headingley community. With Council policy guarding against the development of further student housing or pubs in the area, the site could act as a catalyst for the return of families and other long-term residents.
Greg - a member of the Central Headingley Strategy Group - said, "Headingley needs to attract a more balanced population which can begin to build a stronger sense of community in the area. With local people playing a key role, this site can be a huge asset. It can offer green spaces, affordable housing and much more besides to begin Headingley's recovery."
But the new MP sounded a note of caution: "Developers must recognise the scale of the problems which the site presents. The reduction in school-related traffic on the A660 must not be cancelled out by commuters from high-density flats. With Supertram still in limbo, all new development must show how further traffic and parking pressures will be avoided."
