Greg Mulholland, Member of Parliament for Leeds North West, has added his support to The Big Ask, a new national climate change campaign to make the Government legally responsible for reducing the UK's impact on global warming. Greg joined Radiohead front man Thom Yorke in Parliament to launch the campaign.
The Big Ask, launched by Friends of the Earth, is calling for the Government to bring in a new climate change law, following:
The Government has also pledged to cut carbon dioxide levels (based on 1990 levels) by 60% per cent by 2050. The Big Ask, is calling for new laws to ensure that levels are reduced by 3% a year, and avoid the need for expensive and drastic action in the future. A proposed new law, the Climate Change Bill, has been introduced to Parliament by former environment minister Michael Meacher (Labour), with the backing of former Environment Secretary John Gummer (Conservative) and Liberal Democrat environment spokesman Norman Baker.
Commenting, Greg said:
"Climate change is a global threat which could have major local consequences, with many homes and businesses in Leeds North West potentially facing an increased risk of flooding as a result of increased rain fall and rising sea levels.
"I'm very pleased to be able to support The Big Ask campaign and the proposed legislation in Parliament."
