In co-ordination with the Campaign to Protect Rural England, who are launching a campaign against land banking today, Greg Mulholland MP is tabling a motion in Parliament calling on the Government to recognise the seriousness of this problem and the need for a co-ordinated and joined up Government response in order to tackle it.
Greg said:
"It is clear that land banking is becoming an increasingly serious problem and one which is having increasingly severe consequences for the protection of the countryside, particularly green belt areas.
"Not only should these green spaces be protected, but, investors are being encouraged to plough money into these schemes, when the fact is that the chance that they will see a return on this investment is remote.
"Our countryside is being carved up solely for the benefit of these land banking organisations, against the wishes of local communities and residents.
"As a result, I am delighted to be working with the CPRE to draw attention to this issue and to call upon the Government to address it. This is an issue which cuts across many areas, as a result clearly what is needed is a joined up Government response, involving Government departments and organisations such as the FSA, in order to tackle it.
"Our countryside needs to be protected and it is up to the Government to ensure that this is the case."
