New figures have shown that incidents of crime reported at Leeds Railway Station have risen by more than 70% over the past five years.
Over 1,300 incidents of crime were reported in the last year alone, compared with 781 in the year 2001-2002 answers to parliamentary questions by, Derek Twigg MP, the Under-Secretary of State for Transport have revealed.
Commenting, Leeds MP Greg Mulholland said: "These figures are extremely alarming. The huge increase in the rate of crime occurring at Leeds station is a source of great concern to me, as I am sure that it will be to people right across Leeds .
"It suggests that there are serious issues in the way in which security at the station is currently being handled; it is utterly unacceptable that the situation should have been allowed to deteriorate so dramatically.
"This is yet another example of this government's failure to deal effectively with crime in urban areas. If New Labour are serious about getting tough on crime then I suggest they start with Leeds Station."
