Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, today condemned the failure of New Labour to support post offices across the country. His comments come after an independent report by the postal services watchdog Postcomm, which gave a damning criticism of government ministers over post offices.
On Monday the Liberal Democrats will lead a debate in the House of Commons calling for action to taken to save post offices before it is too late.
Commenting, Greg Mulholland said:
"This report provides further evidence that the Government is incapable of supporting the post offices vital to our local communities. The report warns that some 5000 post offices are in danger of closing if nothing is done to help them.
"Here in Leeds North West and across the nation, we recognise the important and active role that Post Offices play in the life of the community - I hope that the Government will do the same.
"My Lib Dems colleagues and I will continue to champion the case of the Post Office. We want to secure new services for Post Offices to offer the public, to ensure they remain viable businesses and a constant presence on our High Streets and in our villages."
