Greg Mulholland MP, the constituency MP of the family of Mirza Tahir Hussain, the Leeds man facing execution in Pakistan, has slammed President Musharraf for his attempts to distance himself from the crisis by claiming that he does not have the power to intervene.
Despite the statements made by legal experts in Pakistan clearly stating that the Pakistani Constitution gives the President both the power and authority to intervene, General Musharraf is still claiming that he is not able to commute Mirza Tahir's death sentence.
Commenting Greg said:
"This man's life is now hanging in the balance. It is incredible that, despite all the legal advice which has been given to the contrary, President Musharraf is still failing to accept his duty to overturn what he must know is an unsafe conviction.
"The Constitution of Pakistan clearly gives the President the power to intervene and we will not stop campaigning until he uses this authority to spare Mirza Tahir and bring him back home to his family. "If this unjust and barbaric sentence is carried out, it will be a stain on the reputation of Pakistan."
Greg Mulholland is today writing to President Musharraf asking him to use the powers he has to resolve this case, and also to the Prone Minister Tony Blair, to urge him to do whatever he can to intervene in this case again before a terrible miscarriage of justice takes place.
