An Ofsted report has revealed that one in four secondary schools is failing to provide children with adequate citizenship education. Ofsted Inspectors identified widespread misunderstanding in schools over what was should be taught and poor lessons were linked to a lack of commitment from senior staff.
Commenting, Greg Mulholland, the Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Schools, said:
"Teaching young people about aspects of life such as identity, rights and responsibility plays a key role in helping them to better understand the society in which they live.
"This subject should not be treated as less important than the more established subjects. It is an effective means of building ties across different communities in the UK.
"The current standard of citizenship education is clearly not good enough and this must change. A good place to start would be to give the teachers the proper training that they require to deal with this important subject."
