Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, has said following Tony Blair's speech on anti-social behaviour today, that if the PM wants to concentrate on the early years of a child's life the Government must realign its spending priorities.
Instead of wasting money on schemes such as the Child Trust Fund where money will be tied up for more than 18 years, long after the period of 'early intervention' called for by the PM, the money should be used for initiatives such as the reduction of class sizes which could actually help children during their early years.
Commenting Greg said:
"It seems strange that the Prime Minister is calling for early intervention to tackle social exclusion and anti-social behaviour, yet the Government is ploughing money into schemes such as the Child Trust Fund which is of absolutely no benefit to children during these years. Instead, all it will be used for will be to pay off the university tuition fees that the Government itself have introduced!
Scrapping the Child Trust Fund would allow this money to be used to fund measures such as smaller class sizes which would actually help during the early formative years of a child's life."
Also, following revelations that a group of Labour MP's have written to the Tony Blair this morning calling upon him to resign his position, calls have intensified for the PM to name his departure date. Greg Mulholland has called for Tony Blair say when he will leave after weeks of damaging leaks and speculation over the Prime ministers position.
Greg said "There is a vacuum in leadership and the Labour party is in crisis. This situation does not allow for stable government and this is bad for Britain." Greg added "It is a mess, it needs sorting out and to do this we need a date now for Mr Blair's departure".
