A quarter of newly qualified teachers may be unable to find full-time employment when they graduate this summer, according to figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats.
Parliamentary questions from Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson, Greg Mulholland MP, revealed that, according to the most recent figures available, over a quarter of teachers are not in full-time employment a year after graduating.
Commenting, Mr Mulholland said:
"This summer, young graduates across the country are working hard to complete their training as teachers, but they may not have a job at the end of all their efforts.
"The Government is faced with an over-supply of teachers in many subjects, yet they continue to spend huge amounts of money on predominantly generic advertising campaigns.
"Recruitment should be focused instead on subjects areas where there is still a deficit of teachers such as Maths and Science.
"This is a clear misuse of money that could be better used to improve the standard of education in our schools."
