Greg Mulholland MP, member of the Select Committee for Work and Pensions, has criticized the plans revealed by the Government today for the reform of the Child Support Agency.
Rather than the introduction of a genuinely new organisation to replace the ailing CSA, the Government appear to be merely re-branding and repackaging the existing organisation.
Further, action to undertake these changes is not expected at all for another 2 years till 2008.
Commenting Greg said:
"This announcement on the CSA offers rebranding, further delay and more gimmicks, when what is needed is immediate action.
We are now in our tenth year of CSA incompetence under Labour, and all we have is further uncertainty, which could make absent parents even less likely to pay up.
Since 2005, we have had one government review of the CSA, one government redesign and now we are offered further consultation with no action until 2008. People are entitled to much more rapid action to replace the least effective child support system in the developed world.
Instead of a genuine replacement organisation, the Government proposals appear to be just re-badging and repackaging; cosmetic changes which will bring little actual benefits.
Once again, the Government is talking about new gimmicks such as curfews, when existing measures such as withdrawing driving licenses are barely used. Meanwhile, the Government threatens to wipe away the arrears which have often built up as a consequence of CSA inefficiency.
Only replacing the CSA with a new organization with complete access to income details and the ability to deduct money at source from those who refuse to pay would make a real difference."
