Leeds MP Greg Mulholland has demonstrated his commitment to the local community in Leeds North West by giving his support to the Sustainable Communities Bill, which proposes to give power back to local people.
This Bill seeks to reverse the continuous closure of thousands of post offices, bank branches, independent shops, local pubs and newsagents, and it recognises that local communities are the experts on their own problems and how to solve them.
Commenting Greg said:
"Local people must be given the ability to ensure that decisions are taken which help and not hinder their local communities.
Not only would this Bill would provide this authority but it embodies proposals vital to the protection of the environment, social justice, and increasing political involvement and representation.
I am completely committed to these ideals; only through more local control and greater electoral participation at local and national level can democracy in this country be truly representative
Also key to the sustainability of local communities are the facilities and community organisations available to members of those communities, if these facilities are not available the ties which hold these communities together are critically weakened.
This sense of local community spirit is a key reason why I have launched a campaign to save small local shops. The loss of these shops not only has an economic impact, but a social and environmental impact as well.
We risk loosing choice where we can shop and what we can purchase, reducing quality and diversity while at the same time loosing an important part of the heritage and culture of towns and a key element of what binds local communities together."
