Mirza Tahir Hussain, the Leeds man currently on death row in Pakistan has been granted a stay of execution until mid July.
Commenting Greg Mulholland, the constituency MP for Mr Hussain's brother Amjad Hussain, the family member who has been leading the campaign against his sentence, said:
"I am very pleased that President Musharraf has intervened in order to prevent Mr Hussain's execution on the first of June, it gives us more time and is a huge, if temporary, relief to the family".
It also shows that the message is getting through at the highest level about this travesty of justice and it is a credit to the efforts that have been made at home and abroad by Mr Hussain's family and their supporters".
However, we must remember that this is only a temporary reprieve. Mr Hussain still faces the threat of execution and we must not forget that he has already spent almost 18 years in prison in Pakistan as a result of a highly dubious conviction which has been overturned twice".
Our efforts, and the efforts of the British Government and of the international community, must continue until the death sentence is quashed. Then the case can be reviewed and in the end we hope justice will be done and that Mr Hussain will finally be allowed to return home to his family and to Leeds."
