Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, roundly criticised the government's handling of the crisis in the NHS after Prime Minister Tony Blair met beleaguered NHS bosses today. Commenting Mr Mulholland said;
"With 6,000 jobs set to go it is clear that the government has lost its control over the NHS. We are seeing a series of ill-conceived, short term measures that make it impossible for the NHS to plan plausibly and sensibly for the future.
"Staff morale is plummeting and thousands of jobs are being shed. This will have a detrimental effect on frontline patient care. I am well aware locally that health provision seems to lurch from crisis to crisis.
"The government is obsessed with regulation form the centre when what is needed is to make the NHS more accountable to local people, who can determine locally the services they need and hold the local officials to account.
