Greg Mulholland MP for Leeds North West has today criticised new guidelines by the Sentencing Guidelines Council which recommend prison sentences for rape should be reduced by 15 per cent. Mr Mulholland has tabled a motion in Parliament calling for the Government not to implement these recommendations which come at a time when the number of reported rapes is rising year on year.
Commenting Greg Mulholland MP said;
"At a time when the number of reported rapes is rising year on year these recommendations send out all the wrong signals.
"There is a real danger that victims may be dissuaded from coming forward if they think their attacker will not receive an adequate sentence."
