Leeds MP, Greg Mulholland, has written to the Secretary of State with responsibility for the Fire Service, the Rt Hon Hazel Blears MP, to outline his concerns over the potential impact of proposed cuts to local fire service funding.
A Government consultation paper contains plans for a funding re-organisation which would mean that the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service will lose up to £1.3 million in funding.
Commenting Greg said:
"Well equipped and well funded local fire services are vital, and I am highly concerned about the impact of these proposals could have for our region.
"As a result I have written to the Secretary of State to demand her assurance that the people of West Yorkshire will not be disadvantaged, or exposed to greater risk, as a result of these proposals.
"The West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service performs a tremendous service for the local community, and there is a real risk that these new Government plans could severely undermine the great work they do."
