In Oral Transport Questions in the House of Commons today Greg Mulholland MP, challenged Transport Minister Rosie Winterton to tell the people of Yorkshire when they can expect to get off the bottom of the league on transport spending having been rooted there for 3 years.
He also asked why the Government regarded £350 million pounds to transform transport in Leeds as too expensive, even though under the Department's own guidelines it provided value for money, yet £16 billion for the Crossrail scheme in the South East was deemed good value for money.
Commenting Greg said:
"The people of our region are sick and tired of the unfair deal we receive on transport especially compared with the south east of England.
"The Minister refused to tell the people of Yorkshire when we can expect to get off the bottom of the league for transport spending where the region has been rooted for three years."
"The Government can find £16 billion to spend in London, where there is already a comprehensive, integrated transport system, but cannot find a fraction of that to fund theLeeds Supertram scheme which would transform transport in the city.
"Crossrail shows yet again that the Government is prepared to devote huge resources to addressing transport issues in London, but continues to sell our region short".
