Greg Mulholland MP has received a reply from North Yorkshire County Council to the letter he wrote concerning finding a solution to the problems of Hanson's quarry vehicles.
Mr Mulholland was pressing for a solution which would deal with the problem in Otley but without causing a problem in Pool and Arthington, however Mr Mulholland also stressed the need to protect communities over the border in North Yorkshire such as Leathley, Farnley and the WashburnValley.
Cllr John Fort, replying on behalf of North Yorkshire, said they would not implement lorry bans as Mr Mulholland had hoped, but did say they would be prepared to accept independent mediation, albeit without being prepared to accept any findings as binding.
Greg Mulholland, MP for Otley, Pool and Arthington commented;
"Clearly I would have liked North Yorkshire County Council to have agreed to take action now to deal with this problem, but I do feel that they have given a constructive response and are prepared to discuss this issue.
"They have agreed with my suggestion of an independent mediator to work with the two councils to see is there are ways we could all support to deal with this problem.
"I hope now that we will get the two councils round the table and that by doing so, we can find the best solution to protect all the communities in the area. Ignoring this issue is not an option and those who are suggesting this are letting down everyone and failing in their duty.
"All I want is to see a way of making our communities safer, and if everyone is committed that then I hope we will be able to make real progress on this to the benefit of everyone".
