Greg Mulholland MP, Member of Parliament for Leeds North West, has written to the new Secretary of State for Transport, the Rt Hon Ruth Kelly MP, today to call upon her to back measures to address fundamental transport infrastructure problems in Leeds.
In his letter Mr Mulholland calls upon the Transport Secretary to re-examine the case for a light rail system in Leeds, and to invest in badly needed additional rail capacity to ease the burden on the region's railways.
Commenting Mr Mulholland said: "The new Secretary of State must recognise that there are serious transport problems in Leeds, causing congestion and gridlock, and hell for commuters trying to use public transport.
"These problems will not go away of their own accord. The only way to address them is to actually dedicate the same type of funding to Leeds that cities in the south enjoy. "Only then will the people of Leeds finally get a fair deal on transport."
