Greg Mulholland MP, Member of Parliament for Leeds North West, has called for a review of sentences for those convicted of serious sexual crimes, particularly involving children, in the wake of Leeds man Michael Mullen's conviction for seriously sexually assaulting, and then murdering, his two year old niece Casey Leigh Mullen.
Mr Mulholland says it is time for more transparent and honest sentencing including in the most terrible cases giving judges the power to give life sentences that mean life, without the possibility of parole.
Commenting Mr Mulholland said:
"There are some crimes that are so terrible that the only appropriate sentence is for the perpetrators to spend their entire lives in prison. In these cases, life imprisonment should mean life."
"It is time for more honesty in sentencing both to restore public confidence in the criminal justice system. When someone is given a life sentence for a terrible crime, people should know that they will never again be free to commit such crimes again".
