Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson and Leeds MP, Greg Mulholland, has been appointed to the Public Bill Committee to examine the Further Education Bill before it becomes law.
On the day that the committee began its sessions, Mr Mulholland welcomed the opportunity to finally discuss Further Education in depth, so often marginalised in discussions on education in favour of the schools and higher education sectors.
Commenting Mr Mulholland said:
"This Bill provides a long overdue and important opportunity to put Further Education centre stage, and finally address the vital contribution that it makes to education and skills provision.
"FE has been pushed into the background, and treated as a 'poor cousin' to the schools and higher education sectors for far too long.
"This Bill, and indeed the forthcoming Further Education Review in Leeds, places FE at the heart of the education policy agenda, and this can only be good for all those thousands of people currently in, or about to enter, Further Education.
"But it is crucial that we closely examine the legislation that the Government has proposed, so that the excellent contribution made by Further Education institutions can be enhanced, not compromised in the future."
