Commenting on the Royal College of Nursing's warning that student nurses are being left unsupervised in charge of patients, Leeds MP, Greg Mulholland said:
"This is extremely worrying. It highlights that cost cutting, as Trusts seek to cope with their huge deficits, are clearly leading to shortages in qualified staff.
"As a result, unqualified first year student nurses are being left in sole charge of patients, before they have the training and support to deal with this kind of responsibility.
"The risk to patients that this could cause and the burden on these nurses is unacceptable. Nurses are the backbone of the health service. They should not have to pay the price for this Government's failures."
