MP for Leeds North West, Greg Mulholland, questioned the Post Offices Minister Jim Fitzpatrick, during Trade and Industry Oral Questions in the House of Commons today, on the Governments plans for widespread Post Offices Closures.
Mr Mulholland pressed the Minister on why, at a time when the Government is about to commence with nationwide post office closures, why, at the same time, is it attempting to reform Postwatch, the organisation which represents the consumers who use this service.
Commenting Mr Mulholland said:
"The Government continues to push forward with its ill-advised, highly damaging, and massive Post Office closure plans, in spite of protests from those in our region, and right across the country, who depend on this vital local service.
"As if this was not enough however, it also plans, at exactly the same time that it embarks upon these closures, to abolish and redesign the only organisation which provides consumers who use the post office with a voice, at a time when they will need it most.
"While there may be a number of good reasons for reforming Postwatch, to do it now is surely madness. It flies in the face of the Governments claim that it will listen to the opinions of local people when deciding the fate of our post offices.
"It paints a very bleak picture for the future of the post offices which serve our community."
