Answers to parliamentary questions tabled by Leeds MP, Greg Mulholland, have revealed that the average student debt is expected to rise from £7,918, before the introduction of variable top up fees, to £15,000.
Commenting on the figures Mr Mulholland said:
"These figures confirm what we have long feared, top up fees are going to land students with a mountain of debt to face by the time they finish university.
"Students who already struggle to fund their way through university, particularly those from the poorest backgrounds, will undoubtedly be put off applying at the thought of being lumbered with huge debts by the time they graduate.
"Students are already working more and studying less to make ends meet, this will only get worse as top up fees continue to bite."
"It is vital that our Universities are properly funded, but the Government must recognise that dumping an even greater mountain of debt upon students cannot be the answer."
