Leeds MP Greg Mulholland, called upon Higher Education Minister Bill Rammell in Parliament today to do more to stop those from poorer backgrounds and ethnic minority communities from being deterred from going to university as a result of top up fees.
Commenting following the debate on widening participation in Higher Education Mr Mulholland said:
"Recent figures suggest those from poorer backgrounds and ethnic minority communities make up only one fifth of those going to university, and top up fees are likely to only widen this divide, particularly if the current cap is removed.
"The Government needs to do much more to enable these people to overcome the barriers which are preventing them from accessing Higher Education."
