Greg Mulholland MP, Shadow Schools Spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats, called upon Schools Minister the Rt Hon Jim Knight MP in Parliament today during oral education questions to do more to address the difficulties faced by newly qualified teachers in finding full time teaching jobs. Figures revealed in response to a parliamentary written question tabled by Mr Mulholland revealed that over a quarter of newly qualified primary and second school teachers were not in full time employment six months after they graduated.
Commenting Mr Mulholland said: "This is clearly a serious problem. Hundreds of people are responding to the Government's 'Those who can, Teach' campaign, only to be told after months of study that they, in fact, 'can't'.
"The Government needs to reorganise its priorities. They should target recruitment on areas where there is still a shortfall of qualified teachers, like modern languages, instead of encouraging dedicated candidates to enter teacher training when they may not have a job at the end of all their hard work."
