Leeds MP Tables Motion in Parliament on West Yorks Fire Service Cuts

November 26, 2007 12:15 PM

Leeds MP, Greg Mulholland, has tabled a motion in the House of Commons outlining concerns over the potential impact of a Government consultation paper which contains plans for a funding re-organisation for the Fire Service, which would mean that West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Services will lose up to £1.3 million in funding.

Commenting Greg said:

"Well equipped and well funded local fire services are vital, and I am highly concerned about the impact of these proposals could have for our region.

"I have tabled a motion in Parliament to point out the good work done by the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, and other metropolitan Fire and Rescue Services, and the need for a more fundamental review before any changes are made to the funding they receive.

"The West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service performs a tremendous service for the local community, and there is a real risk that these new Government plans could severely undermine the great work they do."

West Yorkshire's Chief Fire Officer, Phil Toase, speaking on behalf of all the metropolitan brigades said:

"It makes no sense to change the fire funding formula in such a way that it shifts £30 million away from those authorities which serve some of our most deprived and 'at risk' communities.

"We are fortunate to have MPs from across the political spectrum who are prepared to speak out and carry the fight into the heart of Westminster.

"We remain hopeful that common sense will prevail and that any immediate changes to the formula will be put on hold pending a more fundamental review of local government finance."

If you are a resident of the Leeds North West constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
