DELIGHTED THAT CHARITY RUGBY LEAGUE CHALLENGE MATCH WAS SUCH A SUCCESS - MULHOLLAND

June 20, 2008 9:27 PM

Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West and Vice-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group, has expressed his delight that the Rugby League Challenge Match between Politicians and Journalists held at Headingley Stadium on Saturday was a great success, drawing in politicians and journalists from all over the country to play in a full blooded game of Rugby League, and raise money for the Rugby Football League Benevolent Fund.

After a hard fought contest over 80 minutes, the final score stood at 32:16 to the Journalists, despite a try from Greg who also captained the politician's team. The Man of the Match award on the day went to Lord (Dominic) Addington after an excellent display, which was presented by Spen Allison Chair of BARLA (The British Amateur Rugby League Association). The trophy to the winning team was presented by former Rugby League star Barrie McDermott.

As a last minute surprise to both the players and the spectators, former rugby league legend and ex-captain of Great Britain Garry Schofield also took part in the match, as did former Rugby League pro Ikram Butt, who also coached the Politicians Team.

Commenting on the match Greg said:

"I am delighted that the match was such a success.

"It was a really good contest and a full blooded game of Rugby League, so I will be surprised if there were not a few aches and pains around now!

"It was great to have MPs, Councillors, a Lord, and journalists all playing Rugby League, it is a fantastic advertisement for the sport, not to mention raising money for a very worthy cause.

"And of course for me to score a try was a dream come true!"

If you are a resident of the Leeds North West constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
