Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West and Member of the Work and Pensions Select Committee, has called upon the Government to act on the recommendations made in a report by the Committee today to substantially overhaul the benefits system for carers.
The report calls the current system 'outdated' and calls upon the Government to give the financial help to carer's to help them cope with the financial pressures caused by the additional costs of caring and from either reducing working hours, moving into lower paid work, or giving up paid work.
Commenting Greg said:
"Carers not only have to deal with the burden of caring for someone with often serious care needs, but they carry that burden often with little help or support.
"Many face considerable financial costs because many have to give up work or reduce their hours in order to care for their loved one.
"It is time to recognise the impact that this situation is having every day for carers' right across the country, and instigate a fundamental overhaul of the care and support system and reform of the wholly inadequate, and absurdly complex, system of benefits for those who provide care.
"Carers already have enough to deal with, they should be supported by the state, not ignored."
