BROWN USING PRESCRIPTION CHARGING AS A POLITICAL FOOTBALL - MULHOLLAND

October 8, 2008 12:00 PM

Commenting on today's ministerial statement on prescription charges, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Minister and MP for Leeds North West Greg Mulholland said:

"It is very welcome that cancer patients will be exempted from prescription charges, yet there are still huge numbers of other vulnerable groups who will feel enormously let down by today's announcement.

"Gordon Brown said that he would abolish charges for all patients with long-term conditions. He is reneging on that promise.

"It now looks more and more like this was an empty gesture, designing to grab headlines and win plaudits at a time when he was desperate to buck his descent in the polls, rather than a general commitment to help the thousands of people who suffer with devastating long-term illnesses.

"We need action for those with long-term conditions, not a cheap effort to score political points."

If you are a resident of the Leeds North West constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
