The Prime Minister Gordon Brown has agreed to meet with Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, Alzheimer's sufferer and author Terry Pratchett, and experts from the Alzheimers' Research Trust to discuss funding of research into dementia following Prime Minister's Questions in the House of Commons today.
Mr Mulholland raised the issue citing that the current level of funding - only 3% of the medical research budget - will be called 'appalling' in a petition which will be presented to Downing Street on the 26th November by Mr Pratchett, Greg, and members of the Alzheimer's Research Trust.
Commenting Greg said:
"I am very pleased that Prime Minister has agreed to meet with us to discuss this very important issue.
"Dementia affects hundreds of thousands of people in the UK, yet it is still fundamentally misunderstood and receives scant attention.
"An increase in research funding is urgently needed so that we can finally begin to understand and beat Alzheimer's, and help the thousands of people and their families who suffer from the devastating impact of dementia."
