Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, gave a speech on the floor of the House of Commons last night, calling on the Government to ensure that the Post Office Card Account remained at the Post Office, or risking sounding the death knell for a genuinely national post office network, and for thousands of local post office branches.
During his speech, Greg drew attention to the numbers of elderly and disabled residents who depend on the post office as a vital lifeline, and the lack of services in many areas meaning that these people and many others will simply not be able to get access to the services that they need if these post offices close their doors.
Mr Mulholland also highlighted the views of Sub Postmasters from his own constituency, including Sandra Jarvis, sub-postmaster of Ireland Wood post office, as well as local residents and pensioners, who have all expressed their concern over the future of their post office branches.
Commenting Greg said:
"Across the country thousands of post offices have already been forced to close, and without the card account and the revenue it brings, many more will follow.
"Little consideration seems to have been given to how people who depend on their local post office as a vital lifeline will be affected by these closures, or the fact that in many areas a lack of services will mean that these people will simply not be able to get access to the services that they need.
"The simple fact is that without ensuring the Card Account will remain at the Post Office, the Government is sounding the last post for the national post office, and for thousands of local post office branches."
