MP Greg Mulholland welcomed constituents to Parliament last Wednesday as part of a protest against the Government's inaction over the rapid decline of the bee population.
Hundreds of people marched on Downing Street to push for the government to invest more in protecting bees. Presently only £200,000 a year is given to research bee health, yet in that period their decline has cost the UK £54 million. Greg joined local campaigners Linda Mills, Membership Secretary of the Harrogate and Ripon Beekeepers Association, and other local campaigners in Parliament after they had presented a petition to Downing Street.
Commenting Greg said
"I was delighted to welcome Linda and other beekeepers from my area to Parliament.
"I think that there is a common misconception about the bee industry, and an underestimation of its importance. Not enough people realise that in addition to producing honey, bees and bee-keeping underpins the entire agricultural economy through pollination in particular, and little account has been taken of the impact that the huge numbers of bees dying off will have on this huge industry.
"Linda and the others who came down to Parliament to lobby the Government are doing great work to get this issue on the political agenda, and it is now up to the Government to sit up and listen."
