Following the Government's announcement today that the Post Office Card Account will remain within the national Post Office network, local MP Greg Mulholland has declared it a huge victory, for all the thousands of people who those who campaigned locally, and across the country, to keep this vital lifeline at the Post Office, and for those who depend upon it.
Mr Mulholland gave an impassioned speech in the House of Commons on Monday calling on Government to retain the Post Office Card Account at the Post Office, and citing drew attention to the numbers of elderly and disabled residents who depend on the post office as a vital lifeline, and the lack of services in many areas meaning that these people and many others will simply not be able to get access to the services that they need if these post offices close their doors.
Commenting Greg said:
"I am delighted that the Government has finally seen sense and decided to keep the card account at the post office, it is a momentous decision for the future of thousands of local post office branches.
"After months of uncertainty, all those thousands of people who depend on the post office can breathe a heavy sigh of relief, and subpostmasters can finally begin to plan for the future.
"Credit must go to all those people who campaigned so tirelessly against these closures and who expressed their views so loud and clear that the Government had no choice but to sit up and take notice. "
