Greg Mulholland MP has called for a full public enquiry into the Eccleshill Independent Centre after a damning verdict was announced at the inquest today into the death of Dr John Hubley, who went into the centre for an operation to remove his gall bladder.
The inquest into Dr Hubley's death concluded today recording a verdict of 'misadventure aggravated by neglect'. During the announcement of the verdict the coroner spoke of 'gross failings' at Eccleshill.
Commenting Greg said:
"This is a terrible tragedy and now we know a completely unnecessary one, which must be desperately hard for the family to cope with.
"At least they now have the clear answers they deserve, but they must confirm their worst fears that John's death should not have happened.
"It beggar's belief that operations of this nature have been carried out apparently without proper equipment, access to blood, and proper emergency procedures in place.
"This verdict not only means that there can be no confidence in Eccleshill, it must call into question the levels of safety at independent treatment centres. It's worrying enough that operations have been carried out in facilities where there is clearly inadequate back up in case of emergency, but even more so when the NHS is using these centres for NHS patients.
"This is one tragic case, but the public will quite rightly demand to know whether it is safe for them or their family to be treated at Eccleshill, and this is why I am calling for a full public enquiry into the facility, so that these questions can be answered."
