Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, questioned Ministers on the floor of the House of Commons today to take a closer look at the way the big pub companies operate the pub "tie".
Mr Mulholland called for the Government to review the PubCo model raising the issue of the Morgan Stanley report that showed 20 - 30% of the biggest PubCo companies pubs are "uneconomic" with licensees making less that £20,000 a year or the equivalent of £3.30 an hour for a couple, less than the minimum wage.
Commenting Greg said:
"It is a cold, hard reality that the way some pub companies are operating under tie is making it impossible for some of their tenants to make a living.
"The select committee is reviewing this, but the Government needs to recognise the skewed way some PubCos are operating the tie and now take action to address the failure of the Beer Orders, introduced by the last Government.
"Unless the tie operates on a fairer basis, more pubs up and down the country will be forced to close their doors."
