Today, in a one -off evidence session on the Department for Work and Pensions Performance Report, Greg Mulholland MP grilled Sir Leigh Lewis, Permanent Secretary for the Department about the Government's child poverty targets.
Greg repeatedly asked Sir Lewis if the Government was still on course to meet the 2010 target and Sir Leigh repeatedly refused to answer. He also asked if the Government was actually still committed to the target and Sir Leigh again pointedly refused to answer.
Commenting, Greg said;
"Sir Leigh Lewis's remarkable refusal to answer a simple question asked again and again was extremely revealing. It is clear that as things stand and with a year to go, the Government is not on course to meet the target and unless there is substantial investment in this year's budget, they will fail on this important goal they set themselves.
The fact that Sir Leigh would not even say whether the Government is actually still commited to the target said it all. It seems clear that they are going to wriggle out of this commitment, probably by blaming it on the recession when it has been their lack of investment that is to blame. We at least deserve honesty about this and I'm afraid all we got today was evasion, this is not good enough over something so important."
