Local MP Greg Mulholland has backed calls for the deployment of the U.S missile defence system at Menwith Hill in Harrogate, Yorkshire to be debated in Parliament.
The Government stated in 2007 that there would be 'full discussion' of the use of Menwith Hill, yet still no time has been allocated for MPs to examine this issue. Mr Mulholland has signed EDM 223 tabled by independent MP Dai Davies, which calls on the Government to rectify this situation, and urgently devote time in Parliament to discuss missile defence.
Commenting, Greg said:
"The deployment of foreign military equipment on British soil must be debated in order for the public to fully understand the possible impact and risks it poses.
"It is unacceptable that after being assured that this matter will be discussed openly, the Government has not allowed this issue to be debated in the House.
"It is now time for this issue to brought out into the open and debated, any further delays will allow the Government to bypass any form of scrutiny and allow the United States to install their missile defence system in the U.K without proper checks and balances."
