Greg Mulholland MP has said that plans put forward by the Conservatives promising a high speed rail link between London and Leeds are a con - the high speed line they propose will actually be a west coast line from London to Birmingham and Manchester north to south and then another line will link Manchester and Leeds.
As a result, the line will not be a direct link between Leeds and London as they are presenting it.
Greg Mulholland recently tabled an early day motion calling for a Y-shaped line which would allow high speed services to run from both Leeds and Manchester directly to London through Birmingham (where the lines would intersect).
Commenting Greg said:
"The claims that the Tories are making that they will build a new high speed rail line between Leeds and London is a con job.
"They are talking about a west coast route to Manchester, then a Manchester to Leeds branch which may never even get built.
"If we are serious about high speed rail in this country, we need a direct London link to Yorkshire too linking Sheffield and Leeds direct to London.
"So instead of trying to pull the wool over the eyes of people in Leeds, they should start campaigning for a real high speed link from London to Leeds, that is what Leeds needs and deserves".
