Key local figures have launched an initiative to bring together local people in support of Wharfedale Hospital, and the vital services that it provides to local residents as their community hospital.
The campaign shares the common belief that it is essential that the local community feels that Wharfedale is their hospital. So, on behalf of the community, they are launching the Support Wharfedale Hospital campaign to provide ongoing support for all those who work so hard at the hospital to deliver services that local people rely on, and to ensure that the Wharfedale Hospital continues to go from strength to strength.
A letter, signed by Cllr Jim Spencer on behalf of Otley Town Council, Peter Heald on behalf of Otley Town Partnership, Chris Little on behalf of Otley and District Chamber of Trade and Commerce, and local MP Greg Mulholland will be presented to Ross Langford of the Leeds NHS Trust tomorrow to kickstart the campaign, and more action will follow.
Commenting Greg Mulholland MP said:
"In the past there have been serious concerns that Hospital has not been used to its full potential, and local residents have had to fight hard to ensure that key services remain at the Wharfedale.
"Now that real progress has been made, and the Hospital is providing such a positive service to the community, we must ensure that we support the excellent staff working at the hospital and make sure that the local community receives the full benefit of the facilities that the hospital provides.
"That is the aim of this campaign, and we hope that as many local people and groups will lend their support as possible, so we can send a clear and powerful message that we support our hospital."
Otley Town Partnership Chairman Peter Heald said
"I fully support this campaign, the Wharfedale is at the heart of our community and we want to see the Hospital offer as many services as possible to local people."
Otley Town Council Leader Jim Spencer added:
"I would ask local people to back the campaign, The Wharfedale is an excellent modern facility that has first class staff. The Town Council wants to see the Hospital made full use of and offer as many services as possible to local people."
Campaigners are asking local people and groups to sign up to and support three key aims:
1. To call upon the Leeds University Teaching Hospitals Trust to make the most of Wharfedale Hospital and ensure that there are as many services as possible offered to local people.
2. To call upon the NHS Leeds (the Leeds Primary Care Trust) to commission as many services and procedures to Wharfedale Hospital as possible.
3. To call upon the Secretary of State for Health and the Department for Health to guarantee the future of Wharfedale Hospital as a community hospital serving the people of this area.
