Following a recent report showing that working class kids are still struggling to get into university, Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, has called for government action to improve participation amongst the most disadvantaged.
The report shows that despite nearly £400m of concentrated funding since 2001, the proportion of students from lower socio-economic groups has risen by only 2%, and the report makes a number of recommendations of how this can be improved - including improving links between schools and universities, better career advice training for teachers, and making higher education institutions more accountable for how they are spending our money.
Commenting, Greg said:
"The findings of this report show that the Government is still failing on its commitment to widen access.
"Despite almost £400 million of investment, there has been little impact on the numbers of disadvantaged students entering Higher Education.
"We need to do more to ensure those from the poorest backgrounds are given the help and support they need to access their choice of university."
