Commenting on reports today from healthcare analyst Laing & Buisson that thousands of older people with dementia are living in care homes where the staff have no training in how to deal with the condition, Leeds MP and Liberal Democrat Older People's Spokesperson Greg Mulholland MP said:
"Despite the fact that two thirds of care home residents suffer from dementia, many care home staff have not been provided with specialist dementia training.
"This is deeply worrying, and it remains to be seen whether the Government's Dementia Strategy will do enough to bridge this training deficit.
"When the number of people with dementia is expected to reach a million in 15 years this is clearly an issue which we cannot wait before addressing."
