Greg Mulholland MP, Member of Parliament for Leeds North West attended the launch of CAFOD's Climate Justice Campaign Launch in Leeds on Saturday 21st March.
The CAFOD campaign recognises that climate change is not purely an environmental issue, it is also an issue of justice; climate change hits the world's poorest communities first and hardest. The campaign calls on the rich nations to take more responsibility for tackling climate change. Specifically, it calls for Governments to negotiate a socially just post-2012 climate agreement including:
• Recognition and support for the right to sustainable development of people in developing countries.
• Provision by industrialised countries of additional, sufficient and secure funding and technical support to help developing countries adapt to the impact of climate change.
• Commitment by industrialised countries to at least a 30-40% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, based on 1990 levels.
Greg voiced his support, saying:
"It is vital to recognise that climate change has the potential to cause immense hardship in the world's poorest communities."
"Tackling climate change requires government action, but more important still is the willingness of individuals to change their lifestyles. It is my hope that by emphasising that our actions have a global impact and that they really do adversely affect those in a less fortunate position than ourselves, CAFOD's campaign will inspire many people to think again about ways in which they can be more environmentally conscious."
